Saint Rowlands of Otumoetai

All Black - 1976

A key member of the all conquering Bay of Plenty inaugural NPC Division 1 championship winning team of 1976, the 1977 Rugby Almanack had the following to say of Greg Rowlands' effort in the '76 season: "Rowlands was always an enterprising and capable fullback; his boot contributed 122 points to Bay's total and he scored three tries as well to boost his career total past the 500 mark". His performances that year lead to 4 uncapped appearances on the All Blacks tour of Argentina at fullback including two unofficial matches against the Pumas.

Rowlands captained the Bay in the 1977 season including in a game against the touring Lions. He represented the Bay from 1969 to 1983, played 161 matches and scored 1008 points for the union. Involved in radio commentaries of Bay rugby after his retirement, Greg is truly a Bay of Plenty Rugby Saint.
